One Day at a time

MariJohn WIlkin

I’m only human I’m just a man
Help me to believe in what I could be and all that I am
Show me the stairway that I have to climb
Lord for my sake teach me to take one day at a time

Marijohn Melson was born to Christian parents in Texas in 1920. She was brought up attending a Baptist church where she professed faith at an early age and sung in the church choir.

She was an excellent musician and singer, studying music at college and university, travelling across the United States performing in a band.

By 1957 she had moved to Nashville Tennessee, forming her own record company and writing hit songs for many famous country singers. She was rich and successful: a strong-willed, independent, self-sufficient, determined woman.

She became unhappy and lonely. Her early faith became less important. She was drinking heavily and became increasingly reclusive. Several people close to her had died. She tried to take her life on more than one occasion.

She began to search again for God again. Desperate and realising that she needed help she visited a local church pastor to ask for advice.

He told her to thank God for her troubles and let God handle them. He prayed with her.

She went home relaxed and prayerful and wrote a song. With Kris Kristofferson’s help it became the gospel song ‘One Day at a Time’.

She recorded this song on her first album, which she titled ‘I Have Returned’. It was Marijohn’s way of letting people know that she had come back to faith.

One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do every day what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time

One Day at a Time – written in 1973 by  Marijohn Wilkin & Kris Kristofferson: Marijohn Wilkin (1920 – 2006)

I’m only human I’m just a man
Help me to believe in what I could be and all that I am
Show me the stairway that I have to climb
Lord for my sake teach me to take one day at a time

One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do every day what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time

Do you remember when you walked among men
Well Jesus you know if you’re looking below it’s worse now than then
Cheating and stealing, violence and crime
So for my sake teach me take one day at a time

One day at a time sweet Jesus that’s all I’m asking from you
Give me the strength to do every day what I have to do
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus and tomorrow may never be mine
So for my sake teach me to take one day at a time
