It was beautiful walking along the beach early yesterday morning. The fine weather brings everybody out. A group of women were doing yoga, a number of families formed a swimming group, runners were out in shorts and t-shirts.
Most people were cheerful, happy to say, ‘Good morning.’ If there’s a brief conversation it’s usually about the weather. ‘Another lovely morning.’ ‘It’s quite warm already.’ ‘The garden’s could do with a bit of rain…’
I was reminded of three songs that link rain with love…
Watching Les Misérables on Thursday night… Eponine and Marius sung ‘A Little Fall of Rain’. Eponine loves Marius; her love’s unrequited. Fatally wounded, Eponine is dying in Marius’ arms:
Don’t you fret, M’sieur Marius
I don’t feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You’re here, that’s all I need to know…
In the rain, Eponine finds peace and solace, release from pain and suffering and a belief that it can wash away her past. It’s a powerful symbol of cleansing and renewal.
Rain of unrequited love.
Yesterday afternoon at our ‘Singing for Wellbeing’ group we sung ‘Singing in the Rain’:
I’m singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin’
I’m happy again
I’m laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun’s in my heart
And I’m ready for love…
I remember Gene Kelly singing this song of joy. Despite lots of rain, a picture of potential difficulties and disappointments, he’s happy and ready for love…
Rain that’s unimportant because of love.
I remembered the old hymn that talks about lots of rain – storms of life, and security that can be found in God’s love:
In heav’nly love abiding,
No change my heart shall fear;
And safe is such confiding,
For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me,
My heart may low be laid,
But God is round about me,
And can I be dismayed?
Heavy rain that’s overcome by love
The concept of spiritual rain is a strong one. Your post reminds me
how the Bible says that, during the time of the young Samuel, visitations from the Lord were rare. I pray these days are not here and now. 🙏 Lord, please send your rain, forgive our sin and heal our lands.
I enjoyed the hymn, as well. I don’t think I’ve ever heard this one. The melody goes perfectly with the words, and the words are solidly from scripture.

Thanks, David. The metaphor of rain is a good one in a number of contexts. We used to sing about ‘showers of blessing’. The old hymn is one I was brought up with, but it’s a long time since I’ve sung it.
