Be thou my vision…

I don’t know how many times I’ve sung this… the original Irish poem written over 1500 years ago… this form of it written over 100 years ago…

It’s more than an old poem.. it’s a prayer for today

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art;
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

I need better vision. I need to see international war with true compassion and understanding. In my daily life I need to see beyond the human emphasis on money, home, car, possessions, success… focusing on things – people – that really matter

I pray that God will be that vision… that I will see the world through God’s eyes

I need better thinking… Much of my thinking is self-centred. I over-think things. I get anxious and upset. I sometimes think good thoughts, but I need to think my best thoughts more consistently

I pray that God will be in that thinking… that I will think God’s thoughts because he’s there with me

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

I need wisdom and truth… In a world full of lies and confusion I need to see what is true, honourable and just. There are so many opinions, choices, options…

I pray that God will be that wisdom and truth… that my ever-present God will bring clarity, honesty and integrity.

I need relationship… When I feel alone I need a close, intimate, loving, family relationship. I need to feel wanted, accepted, appreciated by someone who is close to me.

I pray that my Father-God will be that relationship… that I will be his true son.
