Where is the love?

What’s wrong with the world, mama?
People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas
I think the whole world’s addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that’ll bring the trauma

The Black Eyed Peas song ‘Where is the love?’ was on ‘The Voice’ last night…

…Meghan and Harry… Either they’re spoilt rich kids causing trouble; with no concern for others they’re bringing heartache to their family… Or they’re victims of the media and a heartless system, suffering misunderstanding, racial prejudice and mental ill-health.

Bad news either way; where is the love?

…Recent demonstrations… Either it’s lawless people disregarding the advice of the police, and the health risks to themselves and the nation… Or they’re people, subject to police brutality, exercising their right to demonstrate and highlight ignored evils in society.

Bad news either way; where is the love?

But, if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate,

It’s easy to have selective love. We choose to love those that are like us, agree with us, belong to our group. Although there may be love it lives alongside hate, which infects and can eventually destroy the love.

Love is a choice; it’s also about being a loving person who loves with indiscriminate love, ‘loving your neighbour’ whoever that neighbour is.

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and hear them cryin’?
Can you practice what you preach?
And would you turn the other cheek

Such love doesn’t come naturally. To be loving people we need super-natural help. My faith points to a God who is both the source of love, the motivation for love, and the enabling strength to make me a loving person.

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love?
